Summer’s Almost Over at the New Jersey Shore

 It’s that time again when everyone makes that famous comment “summer’s almost over”. This weekend the shore resorts will be as busy as when the season opened on Memorial Day weekend. As the tourists have their last spin of the wheel at the arcades on the boardwalks, the hotels put up the vacant signs, swimmers take the last swim in the ocean, romantics take the last glimpse of the Jersey sunset and families have that final dinner out on their summer vacation, the end is near. It’s now time for the family to repack the SUV with all the luggage, strollers, boogie boards and bikes to get ready for that long journey home. As you drive away everyone in the car is silent realizing that this summer vacation is really over and as you follow that sign that points to the bridge you are saddened as you leave the place you had a week’s worth of fun.

For those of us who love summer and live in the New Jersey shore area, we don’t need to be reminded of the cold winter ahead. Many of us local residents are anxious for the Labor Day weekend to arrive, not to see summer end but to say good bye to the vacationers and tourists so we can reclaim our hometowns. Now is the time we can enjoy and relax on our beaches for the rest of the summer without the crowds. This holiday also marks the beginning of dining out at our favorite restaurants again without the long waiting lines. Whether you love the summer or you can’t wait for it to end, one thing is certain, we all will miss many of the other good things that New Jersey has to offer during the summer season.

With summer’s end around the corner also comes the end to some of our favorite fresh grown fruits and vegetables with the most popular being Jersey corn and Jersey tomatoes. There’s no doubt these two are the best in America and we hate to see the growing season end. Other locally grown produce, fruits and vegetables like blueberries, peaches, squash, zucchini, cucumbers and eggplant are among some of the other favorites.

So as we eat that last ear of Jersey corn, pick that last ripened Jersey tomato from the vine in our garden and watch our tan lines fade away, we will enjoy and escort summer to its final day and remember it as the summer of 2009.

Memories...... Down The Shore

New Jersey is my home state. Being a baby boomer and growing up in Central New Jersey my whole life, I can remember as a teenager the excitement of visiting the Jersey shore going to the beaches and boardwalks. Every year as those first warm spring days arrived the popular thing to do with your friends was to go down the shore, no matter what day of the week or time of day, it was spring fever- you had to go there. The phrase “down the shore” doesn’t really make sense but this is the saying among New Jerseyans, meaning go to the shore area beaches. One of us would borrow the family car and take a carload of friends on that exciting unforgettable one hour fun drive down the shore as we could hardly wait to get there. Two  popular places to go were Seaside Heights and Asbury Park. As we drove over the Seaside Bridge you could smell the salt water ocean air reminding us were near our destination.

Popular places to visit along the Jersey coast at that time were Asbury Park boardwalk, Convention Center, Palace Amusements, Seaside boardwalk, Casino Pier, Atlantic City, Steel Pier, Wildwood, Wildwood Crest and Ocean City. Some of these famous shore towns had drastic economic changes during the late 60’s and 70’s and lost popularity as many resorts and businesses had closed leaving places like Asbury Park stripped of their summer tourism business and eventually requiring major economic revitalizing projects which are still taking place.

   Shore Towns activities on the beaches and on the coastline and oceanfront. Things to do like, playing volleyball tournaments in the sand, beachball, make a sand castle with the children. Visit the penny arcades on the boardwalks and along the ocean, gambling in the casinos and amusement parks. Go deep sea fishing or diving, scuba diving, jet ski, surf, crabbing with the fishermen on a charter boat. Bring your cooler filled with ice, soda, beer or other beverages and pack a lunch or have a barbeque and make some hamburgers, hot dogs, corn on the cob, italian sausage, shrimp, lobster, crab, fresh fish, clams, steamers, tomatos, rolls and paper plates, forks , knives and cups. Go four wheeling on the beach in the sand with your 4x4 vehicle or SUV which you will need a beach pass or permit to drive onthe waterfront. Daily passes are available for swimming  or laying on the beaches. The hotels have inground heated swimming pools and spas which you can view from your balcony at some of the timeshares and resorts. take the kids to an amusement park or parks to go on the rides, ferris wheel, roller coaster, fun house, great adventure, play arcade games, skilo, bingo, bowling, shuffleboard, waterrides, waterslide, slides, bumper.
