Jersey Shore the “Not So Reality Show”   Jerry’s Story

The MTV so- called reality show “Jersey Shore” continues another season and the cast will travel to Italy to film a new episode. It’s hard to believe that this show is still airing after all the criticism it has received since it began in 2009. Being a baby boomer, I really cannot relate to the shows characters or what it’s all about. I will admit I have only watched this program for about a total of eight minutes since it started. Like many other full blood Italians, I feel that the show is an insult to my Italian heritage and degrades the community for us residents of nearby Jersey Shoretowns that live here. 

The real kicker is that Nicole Snookie Polizzi is a Chilean- American- NOT ITALIAN, Angelina Pivarnick- all Polish and many of the rest of the cast is made up of half Spanish, half Irish and half Puerto Rican. At first I thought it might just be a generation gap between us boomer's and today's young adults as to why I don't understand the plot, but I realize now this show is not reality, but rather a piece of live marketing trash for MTV. The show is also getting bad publicity from the general public in Italy where the next episode will be filmed. The truth is, the show has been hated by many of us since it started 2 years ago.

Like most new outrageous fads or trends which are so controversial, it draws attention. The entertainment news media grabs the story and slams it down our throats while they take it for a ride to the bank. Like it or not, the fact is that MTV and this shows cast have pinpointed Seaside Heights and the New Jersey shore to put us on the map across the nation and other countries. The show has induced a large cash flow into New Jersey's resort areas that desperately needed it. Local businesses and services have seen an increase in the revenue wave that has followed with the national publicity. Commercial advertisers love MTV’s Jersey Shore for its overwhelming amount of viewers that watch the show and buy the advertised products.

So I guess we need to swallow our pride a little and take all the good, whatever that might be, that comes from the publicity of MTV’s show. Just think if the show was called “California Shores” we wouldn't be as upset and most likely just change the channel and forget about it.
